Plastic Waste
The world produces 300 million tons of plastic each year. There are billions of plastic bottles in the ocean, lakes, and rivers. Also, there are 5 billion plastic bags in the ocean, lakes, and river. Marine animals can eat plastic because the fish cannot tell the difference between plastic or food. Did you know there was a big blue whale found with a 4 ½ meter hose, a 9 meter plastic rope and 2 flower pot inside it. Each person produces 100 kg of plastic waste every year and this plastic waste goes on landfill or in the sea. More than 100 million pieces of plastic are adrift every year. There is 20 times more plastic in the sea now than was 40 years ago. These plastics will last up to 500 years in the ocean,
This is how single use plastic polluted the ocean
since plastic cannot easily dissolve. When plastic hits the sun and wind, it can turn in to microplastic pieces. When a fish eats it, they will die. Micro plastics can also come from toothpaste waste and cosmetic powder. The microplastics contain toxic chemicals. Animals mistakenly see micro plastics as plankton and they eat them. More than 100,000 marine animals die too soon
Oil Spills
Oil spills can cause water pollution because oil is made from chemicals that is used for plastic, too. Oil spills are harmful to marine animals and people. Oil can go into lakes, rivers and ocean. There is 1 million tons of oil that enter the sea every year.
Algae
Algae bloom can cause harm to water, animals, and people. Algae blooms or HABs can happen in fresh water and ocean. HABs are small plants that cannot be seen but are very toxic. Toxic algae are mainly caused by farm waste like pesticides, fertilizer and runoff from the city. Algae blooms mainly take out the oxygen part of the water and degrade the water quality, which can cause water animals like fish to die and humans to have bad water quality
